Stolen Generation

In relation to the letter sent by J Smith on 20th June 2003, he stated that its ridiculous that so much fuss is made of the Stolen Generations in which I completely disagree. Firstly, I will begin by discussing how and the events leading to the occurrence of the Stolen Generation. Charles Darwins theories on evolution and survival of the fittest were accept by the settlers. They believed that Aboriginal batch were weaker and inferior because of the colour of their skin. In 1850s reserves were set aside for aboriginal people as to protect them. This was based on the idea of paternalism which is the bore of understanding after the Aboriginal people as they believed they could non look after themselves. 1883 the Aboriginal Protection Board was open up to manage the reserves. This was the first example of snow-clad paternalism. Aboriginals were to be educated, taught the slipway of civilized British society and to be shown how to farm and devoted the benefit of the Christian religion. Church missions were also established to look after Aboriginal people; however they had no heed for Aboriginal culture or their notions of spirituality.

In the second one-half of the 19th century, many white Australians believed that the Aboriginal race was decease issue and only expert bloods were allowed to stay on reserves however soon they realized that Aborigines werent dying out and thus resulted in the introduction of the Assimilation Act in 1950. Assimilation is the policy of encouraging migrants and Aboriginal people to shine away from their tradition ways of life and cultures and to adopt white Australian ways.
